21 Petition for Removing Native Americans from Washington County

Washington Co. Dec. 1, 1841.

The Native American Indians the citizens of Washington County, Wisconsin, are seeking the Territory of Wisconsin to remove in this citizen petition were Potawatomi.

To the honorable Council and House of Representatives of the Territory of Wisconsin.

The undersigned inhabitants of the County of Washington respectfully ask, to have the remaining Indians by some efficient and effective measure removed forthwith out of our County.

We desire an immediate action on the above, in as much as many of our inhabitants have threatened to take the matter into their own hands, which may endanger the lives of the whites as well as of the Indians, and whereas several petitions have already been forwarded heretofore without any action upon them, so far as we know, it will soon become necessary for us to adopt some measure, in order to secure the peace and property of the inhabitants, to remove these Indians out of the County, which we hope will not become necessary by an immediate attention to the subject on the part of the proper authorities.
